Shading and coloring

Alright, don't know how many people will see this or even bother to read it, but if I can get just one proper response, I'll be friggin happy. Basically, the shading and coloring process is way above me, and I so desperately want to understand it. I tried imitating other work, but that only helps when I'm imitating other work. When I TRY to apply it to my own, it no look so good. I tried using the lasso tool to highlight the areas and shade/highlight the selected spots, but then I don't really know how to blend it right. I watch a couple of tutorials on Youtube, or wherever on the net, and even going to school (but haven't had a photoshop class yet) to learn, but so far no good. Any and every help will be super awesome and appreciated!!!
